This title does not do the book justice because everyone here has a secret, including two sisters – not just one, their mother, their father and a phony psychiatrist.
The first big secret has caused a lot of damage and ended up with a split and dysfunctional family, after the two sisters, Rosy and Amy, are warned by their mother never to speak about what happened to their father. Amy has ended up institutionalised and there she meets James who is treating her as a psychiatrist. What happened to their father is complicated because all of the characters are keeping different secrets which take a bit of unravelling.
It is standard Jane Corry territory, in the sense that it is well paced and what happens stretches the limits of possibility but is, cleverly, just possible. Rosy is the better drawn of the two sisters. Amy fluctuates between madness and lucidity as the plot requires!
It’s a good story and impossible to guess the ending as it rolls along, letting go of the odd secret along the way to keep the reader involved. It might make you think that if you are keeping any secrets it would be good to confess now!
